Dr Brendan O’Flynn

Holistics – Wearable Research at Tyndall National Institute aiding in Frontline Medical Care

The Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) team at Tyndall National Institute for the better part of a decade have been tackling this concern by developing miniature, low cost, wireless Body Sensor Networks (BSNs). BSNs can be employed to measure physiological and environmental factors pertaining to the wellness state of the individual. The technology has now reached a point where parameters such as ECG, SPO2, EMG, EEG, blood pressure, inertial movement and respiratory rate can be measured and wirelessly transmitted to where critical decisions can be made. There are numerous advantages to being able to remotely monitor these factors particularly for preventative healthcare. This is owing to the systems ability to flag degradative symptoms in real-time following which pre-emptive action can be taken to ensure a more serious condition does not develop.

In response to growing market demand for wearables, Tyndall National Institute
collaboratively built an industry/academic ecosystem of expertise to create disruptive wearable healthtech in Ireland. HOLISTICS industry partners include Irish based corporations: Analog Devices, Henkel, Sanmina and DeRoyal and Irish SMEs: dabl Ltd, PMD Solutions, VRAI and Setanta College. Clinicians from Ireland’s National Clinical Research Facility in Cork as well as academic leaders from Tyndall’s MicroNano Systems Centre and researchers from the SFI Insight and LERO Centres based in UCC’s School of Computer Science represent the HOLISTICS research partners. Establishing this ecosystem model enabled a collaboration of scale that combined partners’ expertise to generate impactful innovation.

Supported by the Irish Government’s Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF), the HOLISTICS ecosystem accelerated innovative wearable technology breakthroughs in the areas of infection detection, respiration and blood pressure measurement as well as sports injury prevention. The HOLISTICS Tyndall team’s role enabled the collection, transmission and analysis of data from many sensors that gather information on multiple areas of the body at the same time. This multi-modal sensor fusion process results in the creation of valuable information for both clinicians and end-users in multiple health use cases.

Brendan O’Flynn (Senior Member, IEEE) is currently a Senior Staff Researcher with the Tyndall National Institute and the Head of the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) Group. Since 2004, he has been defining and leading the research activities of the WSN Group, which consists of over 20 researchers comprising postdoctoral researchers, postgraduate students, engineers, and scientists. He is a Science Foundation Ireland-Funded Investigator at the SFI centers—INSIGHT, CONNECT, and VistaMilk. His current research interests include system integration/miniaturized sensing systems, hardware/software co-design of embedded systems, and the deployment of reliable and robust complex systems for human-centric systems.

Prof. Alan O’Riordani

Prof. Alan O’Riordan is a Senior Research Fellow at the Tyndall National Institute. He received his BSc in Analytical Chemistry in 1995 and a PhD in Chemistry (Nanotechnology) in 2005. He has graduated 15 PhDs and 3 MSc. students and currently leads a team of 2 staff members, 6 post Docs, 7 PhD students focused on developing smart sensors and systems for Sustainable Agri-food and Environmental applications. The Group is developing two complementary sensor technologies on silicon chip substrates that employ (i) nanoelectrochemistry and (ii) Surface enhanced Raman Spectroscopy detection mechanisms that providing highly sensitive, selective and reliable measurements. . A key foundation of his research focus is to ensure its relevance and real-life deployment through collaborative co-development. To this end he has competitively won multiple research projects worth circa ~€17M in total research funding to the PI. This has resulted in multiple invited and keynote talks on Agri 4.0 at major conferences (IEEE ESTC and ECS-ICMS conferences), he leads the EU team’s contribution on Smart Sensor Systems for the IEEE International roadmap on Devices and Systems – More than Moore white paper. He has published over 100 peer reviewed publications, one patent granted “Nanowire Electrode Sensor” EU & US (US 20140145709) and won the Enterprise Ireland Gold Medal for Most Innovative Technology Emerging from Third Level (National Ploughing Contest 2016/2022). He is a Steering Committee member of the Royal Society of Chemistry – Electroanalytical Sensors and Systems Group and a core steering committee member of EPoSS SSI conferences 2021-2023.

Development of technologies for Sustainable Agri, food and Environment 4.0

With the global population expected to grow to over 9.6 billion by 2050 it is a projected that a 50-60 % increase in food production will be required. A key challenge then, going forward, will be to sustainably close the food gap. This must be achieved against the backdrop of climate change & desertification, labour shortages and competition for energy, land & resources. It is clear then, that addressing this challenge will require the development of more efficient and sustainable food production techniques and processes. To this end, new technologies, that are fit for purpose, are urgently required to digitise the entire food chain. This convergence between the Internet of Things (IoT) and the agri-food industry requires sensor systems and technologies that provide real time data to producers and processers; required for rapid, but informed, decision making. This presentation will demonstrate how digital technologies can address the sustainability issues, by focusing on specific use case, currently being experienced in this sector.

Goldene- Free-standing One Atom Thick 2D Gold sheets

Recently, two-dimensional (2D) metal nanostructures have attracted tremendous
attention due to their intriguing properties and a number of applications. Various synthetic methods have been developed to produce different morphologies such as nanosheets, nanobelts, nanoplates and nanodiscs and etc. However, the synthesis of metal 2D nanostructures are very difficult due to their high packing density and stable crystal structures. In gold, various synthesis techniques like biological, photochemical and wet chemical routes have been developed but the synthesis of one-atom thick 2D gold is not available. We report, for a first time, a technique to synthesize goldene (i.e., 2-dimensional free-standing one-atom thick gold) from thin films of gold after post heat-treatment of 475oC. Gold thin-films were deposited by thermal evaporation process. Freestanding goldene were floated with isopropyl alcohol from the sapphire substrates and transferred to TEM grids. High-resolution TEM imaging showed herringbone and honeycomb lattices with a lattice spacing of 2.4Å. Selective Area Electron Diffraction (SAED) showed the presence of (11̅1), (200) and (220) planes of fcc gold. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) of IPA transferred crystals from silicon to sapphire substrates confirmed that they are 1-2Å thick gold crystals. Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) confirmed the 2D crystals/films are gold. Current-Voltage (IV) spectroscopy using conductive AFM (C-AFM) revealed that the 2D gold crystals are essentially insulators and application of a localized e-field using the C-AFM tip, resulted in the alignment of the 2D crystals into stable patterns implying the presence of in plane polarization. These phenomenological observations would stimulate significant fundamental research.

Biography

Sudhir Kumar Sharma obtained masters (M.Sc. Physics and MTech Materials) from Department of Physics, Barkatullah University (formerly Bhopal University) Bhopal, India. Afterword’s he received PhD degree from Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, India in 2012. As post doc fellow, he joined at Centre for Nanoscience and Engineering (CeNSE), IISc. Bangalore, India. In November 2013, Dr. Sharma moved to New York University Abu Dhabi UAE (NYU Abu Dhabi) as a research associate in Nov. 2103. Currently, he is working as Senior Research Scientist at NYU Abu Dhabi. His publication record includes about 50 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and more than 85 presentations in national and international conferences. His research interest includes advancement in quantum material synthesis and their applications, RESS processing of pharmaceuticals, thin film deposition and characterization, Supercritical processing of biomaterials for hard tissue applications and probing nanoscale surface properties of various materials by atomic force microscopy.

Prof. Anitha Ethirajan

Prof. Dr. Anitha Ethirajan is a professor at the Institute for Materials Research at Hasselt University (Belgium). She studied engineering in her bachelor studies with a specialization in the field of polymers in India. Then, she moved to Germany and
graduated M.Sc. in advanced materials in 2004 and started her research career at the Institute of Solid State Physics, Ulm University (Germany). She then pursued her doctoral studies (2004–2008) in the field of miniemulsion to develop hybrid nanomaterials under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Katharina Landfester, Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry and Organic Materials, Ulm University (Germany). Afterwards, she worked at the Max- Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Mainz
(Germany) for the period 2008–2010 as a post-doc in the research group Physical Chemistry of Polymers. She then moved to Belgium and started working at the Institute for Materials Research (IMO), Hasselt University as a post-doc. In 2013, she received her FWO (Research foundation Flanders, Belgium) research fellowship and had an independent research group focusing on nanomaterials, nano-bio and soft matter interfaces, drug delivery and bioimaging within IMO at Hasselt University. In 2017, she was appointed as an associate professor at Hasselt University and was heading an interdisciplinary research group “Nanobiophysics and Soft Matter Interfaces” at IMO. She was promoted as a professor at the beginning of 2021.

She is also the coordinator of a master programme: Master in Biomedical Sciences – ‘Bioelectronics and Nanotechnology’ at Hasselt University.

Her research group consisting out of interdisciplinary team members, strongly focuses on the development and
characterization of nanomaterials with functional properties towards optoelectronics and biomedical applications covering
bioimaging, biosensing and nanomedicine.

Responsive nanocarriers as advanced drug delivery systems

Advances in modern medicine have rendered nanomedicine an inevitable option for advanced health care. The increasing demands in the healthcare sector requires continuous evolution in the therapeutic landscapes, delivery strategies, and technologies in order to enhance the delivery of a therapeutic to its target site, minimize side effects/drug toxicity, facilitate patient compliance and improve quality of life. In this regard, the development of novel platform technologies for drug/active ingredient delivery provides significant opportunities for advanced therapies.

Nanocarriers based on responsive functional polymers have gained attention owing to their ability to undergo change in structural conformation/composition under the influence of various physical, chemical and biological stimuli. In complex biological microenvironments, responsive nanocarriers responding to endogenous triggers are of significant interest as payload can be released rapidly and selectively by taking advantage of a unique biochemical environment (e.g., difference between tumor and normal tissues).

In this lecture, we will see the design of different responsive nanocarriers and how they can be used for the delivery of active ingredients. We will also see the importance of understanding the biological environment for designing advanced smart materials that can serve the purpose effectively using relevant examples. The hurdles and requirements for drug delivery systems to go towards clinical translation will also be addressed.
