MEMS on the Moon: The Search for Bulk Water
It is now known from several satellite studies that there is bulk water on the moon, frozen beneath the surface. What is less-well known is that a MEMS device played a key role in the first discovery of this water. My lecture will address two topics: (1) the concept of a “MEMS-enabled product” as distinct from the normal MEMS products, like pressure sensors and accelerometers; and (2) how the Polychromator, a small, light-weight mid-infrared spectrometer, whose key component was a sophisticated MEMS light valve, provided proof to the NASA LCROSS Mission of 2009 that there was bulk water on the moon.

Evolution and the Origins of Biology and Life
The word evolution is most closely associated with Darwin and Biology. Yet it is the word that changed physics in my lifetime.” These are the words used by the physicist Jacob Bronowski in his now classic narration of “The Ascent of Man”, in the 1970s on BBC television. Bronowski is at that point trying to explain the formation of the chemical elements in the stars, by nuclear fusion processes, and concludes “matter itself evolves”. Indeed, all the natural elements, present on Earth and accessible by mining, were the Earth’s inheritance when it was born. Geological and chemical evolution must necessarily precede evolution of life on Earth. For almost the first 1.5 billion years, of its almost 4.6 billion years of existence, the Earth was devoid of life forms. Biology rests on a remarkably intricate canvas of biochemistry. A living cell is throbbing with chemical activity. Interlinked metabolic pathways, finely regulated, synthesise and degrade the molecules necessary for cellular functions and cell division. In Arthur Kornberg’s words “chemistry is the lingua franca of biology and medicine”. How did cellular chemistry evolve? Is there a convincing model for the formation of the first cell? Did cells evolve in a primordial soup of molecules as postulated by Alexander Oparin and J. B. S. Haldane or are soup scenarios too simplistic? Are there plausible pathways for the prebiotic formation of precursors of the molecules of biology? These and many other questions on chemical and early biological evolution do not have firm answers based on incontrovertible evidence. Speculation is a legitimate approach towards constructing evolutionary scenarios and to build hypotheses which might be testable.

Level 2 Laboratory Training
on Semiconductor
6 to 9 July 2024
This Laboratory Training workshop is the second consecutive year of this successful event, co- organized by CMTI (Central Manufacturing Technology Institute), ISSS (Institute of Smart Structures and Systems), and STARC (Semiconductor Technology and Applied Research Centre).
This year's workshop will have more focus on the Eyes-On and Hands-On laboratory sessions with a few very important keynote sessions.
Several packaging techniques viz., dicing, wire bonding, wafer bonding, flip chip, electrodeposition, e-beam welding, bond testing, electrical characterization, leak tests etc., are covered during the laboratory sessions. This year's workshop is also being organized as a pre-conference event to the International Conference on Micro, Nano and Smart Systems (IC-MNSS-2024), which will be held in Bengaluru from July 6-9, 2024.
We believe this training will provide valuable insights and hands-on experience to attendees. The
workshop will cover various aspects of semiconductor packaging, including:
• Semiconductor packaging technologies
• Emerging trends in packaging
• Eyes-on and Hands-on sessions on packaging tools and techniques
• Networking opportunities with industry experts and researchers
We encourage you to take advantage of this unique opportunity to enhance your knowledge and
skills in semiconductor packaging as it just precedes the IC-MNSS 2024.
Seats are limited, so please register early to secure your spot. ISSS members get a discount on
the registration fee.

PANCHAVATI
(Shurpanakha Nasacheda)
The story unfolds in Panchavati, a scenic and idyllic place on the banks of river Godavari. Lord Rama, his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana had completed 10 years of their 14 years of exile from Ayodhya. As per the advice given by the sage Agasthya, they had then arrived at Panchavati. They led a simple life, living in “Parnakutira” a hut built of foliage, nestled in the middle of natural beauty.
The demon Shurpanakha, who was a sister of Ravana (the king of Lanka) also lived in the same
forest.
One day she happened to see Rama, and fell in love and requested him to marry her. Rama
indicated that he was already married to Sita and he had taken a vow to have single wife. Hence
he suggested Shurpanakha to approach Lakshmana. When she requested Lakshmana to marry
her, he understood her evil intent and cut her nose to teach her a lesson. Shurpanakha then
complained to her brothers Khara and Dushana and urged them to take revenge. The story ends
with the fight wherein Rama and Lakshmana kill Khara-Dushana, establishing peace and
tranquility in Panchavati.
